Tania Loses Her Arm in Bus Accident
This is the story of a young girl named Tania, who at a young age was a victim of a traffic incident that resulted in her losing her arm:
Tania is a 7 years old girl from a small city in Bolivia. Before the accident, she led a normal life living with her younger brother and grandmother. However, in January of 2020, she was involved in a traffic accident while traveling to her village and lost her right arm. The bus she was on had suddenly overturned, injuring all passengers but leaving Tania with the only serious injury. The experience was traumatizing for Tania whose severed arm was found meters away. Since the accident was recent, she has not yet fully assimilated to the effects. Sadly, the impact of the
tragic bus accident was not limited to Tania’s physical injuries, her family explained to us that losing an arm was detrimental to Tania’s confidence. After the accident, she could no longer do anything alone and felt terrible. She was afraid and ashamed, and her family struggled to deal with her. Although one thing is for certain, she was determined to get her right arm back. While she still would not be able to use her arm as she did before, as the function of the prosthesis is above all, psychological, Tania would feel more like herself.
Thankfully Tania was able to receive her prosthesis on September, 21 of 2020. Our partner, Creo Bolivia, designed and built her prosthetic arm, fabricating it with an almost lifelike cosmetic cover. Tania and her family have been extremely grateful. Her family now continues to help Tania get used to her new arm, be herself again, play, and go out with her friends. They now have started a more significant journey toward recovering self-confidence.
